Jharkhand families await relief a week after land subsidence

A week after the land subsidence, Jharkhand government yet to provide relief.

In the Chatabad area of Dhanbad's Katras police station, the troubles of the affected families persist even seven days after the land subsidence on August 7. With around 20 houses having collapsed, there is still an atmosphere of fear in the area. Many families are forced to lock their homes and spend the night under the open sky. The local administration has not yet provided any relief, leading to widespread anger among the people.

More than 15 people were injured in this incident. After the accident, the land has cracked in several places in the area, and debris from houses is scattered around. The affected families say that their strong houses sank into the ground in an instant, destroying their household goods and years of savings, but the government remains a mute spectator instead of providing any help. They have blamed local illegal mining as the main cause of this incident, alleging collusion between those in power and the administration, which is why the government is silent.

Local people allege that even after seven days of the incident, neither BCCL nor the district administration has made any permanent relief arrangements for the affected families. Neither sufficient relief camps have been set up, nor have the families been relocated to safe places. People say they are not in a position to return to their homes, and staying in the open is causing significant problems for children, women, and the elderly.

According to local residents, the lights installed by BCCL at the incident site have also been removed. The darkness at night has increased people's fear. People have demanded from the state government and district administration to immediately relocate the affected families to a safe place. According to locals, this is the second incident of land subsidence in Chatabad within the last month. Despite this, the affected families have not yet received permanent security and rehabilitation arrangements. There is deep resentment among people towards the administration and BCCL. The affected families have pleaded with the government for immediate relief and safe rehabilitation.

It is noteworthy that sudden land subsidence in the Chatabad area of Dhanbad's Katras police station caused massive destruction. In this horrific accident, more than 20 houses turned into rubble, while a two-story building completely sank into the ground in no time. Reports indicated that more than 15 people were injured in this incident. With the help of local people, all the injured were immediately taken to the hospital. After the accident, there was chaos throughout the area. Since this incident, there has been significant anger against the administration among the people.

This incident occurred on the evening of August 7, i.e., Friday. In fact, in the Chatabad area, the ground suddenly began to sink with a loud noise. Before people could understand anything, more than 20 houses had collapsed one after the other. Many other buildings developed large and dangerous cracks. This incident of land cracking created an atmosphere of panic throughout the area. People began to run out of their homes to save their lives. Since the accident happened suddenly, many people were inside their homes at the time. Fortunately, nearby people rushed to help immediately.

Local people say that the cause of this accident is illegal excavation in the coal mines of the area, which has hollowed out the ground, causing houses to sink. It is known that this area is famous for coal, and illegal mining is common here.

So far, there has been no statement from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha government, nor has any relief been announced for the victims. Apart from the local media, this matter has not been reported anywhere. Local resident Mohammad Waris Anwar informed TCN via email that the affected families are in extreme distress. People demand that the victims be given appropriate compensation and that the matter be investigated to punish the guilty. Until illegal mining is stopped in the area, such problems will continue to arise.

This issue could further complicate matters for the Hemant Soren government, which has been in trouble since the lathi charge on the student movement.
