Why are temples becoming hotspots for donation theft?

The Uttarakhand Police's SIT has taken significant action in the case of theft of offerings at the Badrinath Temple. The SIT arrested the absconding employee, Pramod Nautiyal, from Dehradun on Monday night.

In the case related to the theft of offerings made by devotees at the famous Badrinath Dham Temple in Uttarakhand, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has taken major action. This case, which emerged amidst the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft, had put the temple administration under scrutiny. Consequently, a four-member committee of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) initiated an investigation.

Based on the investigation, the role of an employee, Pramod Nautiyal, appeared suspicious. He was subsequently suspended, and a case was registered against him. However, after the case was registered, Pramod Nautiyal absconded. The SIT has now arrested him from Dehradun. The Uttarakhand Police has confirmed this. It is noteworthy that the case of misappropriation of offerings at the Ayodhya Ram Temple is currently in the headlines, and the revelation of the offering theft at Badrinath Dham has hurt the faith of the devotees.

On July 2, a case of alleged misappropriation of offerings at Uttarakhand's Badrinath Dham came to light. The issue, which started with an internal investigation by the temple committee, has escalated to a police investigation, a high-level state government inquiry, and a political debate. After reports of alleged irregularities during the counting of offerings on July 2, a social organization lodged a complaint with the temple committee. This entire episode has not only raised questions about the management of offerings at Badrinath Dham but also sparked a debate on the effectiveness of the current system of monitoring and accountability of devotees' donations.

The matter has now taken a political turn. Accusations and counter-accusations are being exchanged between the Congress, CPI (ML), and the BKTC president. Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal alleges that the arrested employee stated during interrogation that if pressured, he would reveal the names of other individuals involved. However, the police have not officially confirmed any such statement.

Godiyal asserts that if Pramod Nautiyal was entrusted with the responsibility of counting offerings at the temple, accountability cannot be limited to just one employee. He alleges that the roles of other individuals should also be impartially investigated, and the role of the temple committee president should be brought under scrutiny. On the other hand, CPI (ML) state secretary Indresh Maikhuri has alleged that this matter should not be considered limited to just one employee.

He stated that if Pramod Nautiyal was the personal assistant to the president, it should also be clarified what responsibilities he was given in Badrinath and whether he was working alone. He has demanded an investigation into the role of the top level of the temple committee. BKTC president Hemant Dwivedi responded by stating that Pramod Nautiyal is not his "personal secretary" but an employee of the temple committee, and he has previously worked as a personal assistant with several presidents. Hemant Dwivedi alleged that Nautiyal was permanently appointed as an Internet Coordinator during the tenure of the then BKTC president and current Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal in 2014 and was later adjusted to the position of personal assistant.
