What is the Ambani connection to US Secretary of State's India visit?

The Ambani family's ties with Trump have been under scrutiny, especially after his recent announcement of investments in the US.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India for the second time in six months. The U.S. State Department announced this on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Energy and trade-related issues will be the most important topics during this visit. Rubio will travel to Mumbai and Jamnagar. He will be in India from October 19 to 22. Before coming to India, he will attend a regional conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. However, he will not be visiting Delhi this time.

According to a report by THE HINDU, the U.S. State Department has stated that Marco Rubio will meet with senior officials of the Indian government during his visit. Discussions will focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries, regional and global issues, and enhancing cooperation in the energy sector.

During Marco Rubio's visit, a program to go to Jamnagar in Gujarat is also proposed. His visit is garnering significant attention. One reason for this is that typically, representatives of a country visit the capital of another country. However, Marco Rubio will be coming to Mumbai instead of Delhi, followed by a program to go to Jamnagar.

Rubio's visit to Jamnagar is also significant because it houses the Reliance Industries refinery, which is considered the largest refinery in the world located at a single site. There are expectations that the Ambani family may organize a grand welcome event during this visit. Recently, a verbal spat was observed between businessman Elon Musk, considered close to U.S. President Donald Trump, and Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani, owner of Reliance Industries.

On October 7, 2026, Elon Musk accused India's major industrialists of preventing the launch of Starlink services in the country. The next day, Musk made another post on the social media platform X. In it, he wrote that Starlink has received licenses in over 165 countries and that it took five years to comply with every law and requirement of the Indian government. Despite this, why has it not received a license? Are Ambanis the real bosses of India?

On October 9, Musk made another post addressing Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani, referring to him as “Dear Prime Minister Ambani.”

Relations between the Trump administration and the Ambani family have also been in the news for various reasons. According to a report by Reuters on March 10, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the construction of a new oil refinery at the southern border of the United States. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries is investing in this project.

This refinery will be built at the Brownsville port in Texas, with a capacity to process 1,68,000 barrels of oil per day. The company announcing the project, America First Refining, stated that this refinery will help reduce the trade deficit between the U.S. and India by $300 billion.

Amid all these developments, the U.S. Secretary of State's visit to Jamnagar and the potential welcome from the Ambani family are quite interesting.

It is also reported that India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will hold a bilateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai. In this regard, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticized the government. He wrote on X-

“Mr. Rubio has called his staff to Mumbai. Modi ji, your Ministry of External Affairs officials do not even understand what is happening. You should explain it to them. Yes, if you want, you can have me do this work too.”

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera claimed on Friday that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not be coming to Delhi, but has instead called India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to Mumbai. In a post on X, Khera stated that U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gore has confirmed this development.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's tweet, Khera wrote, “U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gore has confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is not coming to Delhi and has instead called India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Mumbai. For a foreign government to call India's External Affairs Minister on Indian soil is a new level of diplomatic decline according to the standards of the Modi government.”

Khera further claimed that this development has left officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in confusion. Khera stated-

“According to a source in the ministry, this development has completely left the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs in a state of confusion and disorder.”
